Things to Do Between Games in Elizabethtown, KY
Five hours between games and a carload of kids? Indoor theme park, $1 movies, paddle boats, a free car museum, and a real downtown. The locals’ list.
Tournament weekends at Elizabethtown Sports Park come with a lot of dead time: a 9 AM game, a 4 PM game, and five hours in between with a carload of kids. The good news is that Elizabethtown is not a "sit in the hotel" town. Here is what locals would actually do with a free afternoon, from the team that covers Hardin County events every single week.
The Big, Easy Wins
- Malibu Jack's (1704 N Dixie Hwy) — a huge indoor theme park: go-karts, laser tag, duckpin bowling, mini golf, rides, arcade, and a toddler Bounce Beach zone. Climate-controlled, which matters in a Kentucky July. Hours and pricing at malibujacksetown.com.
- HubHaus (109 S Main St, downtown) — restaurant, craft brewery, and retro arcade under one roof: pinball, Pop-A-Shot, Golden Tee, plus bocce and cornhole out back. Parents get a local beer, kids get quarters. Closed Mondays. hubhaus.com — and our interview with the owner.
- American Legion Water Park (899 N Miles St) — waterslides, lazy river, play structure, and a splash pad for the little ones. Open Memorial Day weekend into August; details on the city parks page.
The $1-to-Free Afternoon
- $1 kids' movies at the Historic State Theater (209 W Dixie Ave, downtown) — the restored downtown theater runs a $1 Summer Movie Series for kids on Tuesdays through late July, plus concerts and throwback screenings year-round. Schedule at thestate270.org.
- Swope's Cars of Yesteryear Museum (1080 N Dixie Hwy) — a genuinely free classic car museum, air-conditioned, open Monday through Saturday. swopemuseum.com
- Freeman Lake Park — a 170-acre lake with paddle boat and kayak rentals in season, walking trails, playgrounds, and an 18-hole disc golf course. City parks page.
- Elizabethtown Nature & Veterans Park (1900 Ring Rd) — minutes from the Sports Park, home to the Vietnam Memorial Wall and Veterans Tribute, with walking trails through the green space.
- Historic Downtown Walking Tour — Thursday evenings in season, a costumed guide leads a free walk from under the cannonball at 40 Public Square. Pair it with dinner downtown.
Do Downtown Right
Downtown Elizabethtown is a real, walkable square: local shops, the Social Food Hall, coffee, records at New Style, books at Birdwhistell's, and Dewster's Homemade Ice Cream & Bakery a short hop up Mulberry (dewstershomemadeicecream.com). Park once and make an evening of it. Hungry? Start with our guide to eating near the Sports Park.
