What We Covered This Week

Hardin Local Weekly opened the first week of March with Rachel Brantingham back in the host chair after two weeks away — and she returned to one of the busiest weekends of the year. Two of the biggest local openings of 2026 landed at once: Boot Barn's Grand Opening and Heartland Mini Golf's season opener, this week's episode sponsor. The energy matched the calendar.

The show leaned on two pre-recorded segments filmed the Friday before, both pulled from the same recording. In the first, local country artist Kevin Jaggers shared the story behind his free weekend performances at Boot Barn. In the second, Nate Bryan — out on a well-earned cruise — delivered his Business Buzz, headlined by the news that Baskin Robbins is moving after 50 years across from the hospital.

In between, Jon O'Brien ran through a packed events week, Rachel brought a steady housing read, and the Experienced Eaters, Britten and Michele McDowell, finally tried a Caribbean kitchen they've been smelling from their front porch for ages. Spring is arriving in Hardin County, and the weekend pretty much sold itself.

Hardin County Events: March 3–8, 2026

Hardin County This Week — with Jon O'Brien

Jon O'Brien walked through a full first week of March. Food Truck Tuesdays return to the Hardin County Farmers Market with nine vendors, Mahj Madness runs every Wednesday in March at The Straight and Narrow, and Friday brings a Queen tribute band to the Historic State Theater alongside Heartland Mini Golf's season opener. Saturday stacks up — a Lions Club pancake breakfast, the West Hardin Middle PTSA Vendor Fair, Black Heart Tattoo Company's grand opening, and a Blue Door x Dreamery vase workshop — before Sunday's Etown St. Baldrick's fundraiser closes the week.

Special Guest: Kevin Jaggers on Boot Barn's Grand Opening

Special Guest — Kevin Jaggers (pre-recorded)

Local country artist and Wolf Radio voice Kevin Jaggers shared how a single email from Boot Barn's California-based marketing coordinator turned into a three-day weekend. Kevin performs acoustic sets Friday, March 6 at 4 PM and Sunday, March 8 at noon, with guitarist Dave; Layla Spring performs Saturday. Entry is completely free all weekend long. A genuine Boot Barn fan who wears their Hooey hats, Kevin made the case that this one's worth getting out for.

Hardin County Housing Market Update — March 2026

Hardin County Housing Market — with Rachel Brantingham

Back from two weeks out, Rachel brought a steady read from the Heart of Kentucky MLS: 34 new listings, 23 homes under contract, and 16 closings, with the average home selling in about 93 days. At 4.9 months of inventory and 359 active homes, the market is balanced. The average list price ($309,198) against the average sold price ($291,142) shows buyers negotiating but still buying. Rachel also flagged the Ford plant retooling — contractors begin April 1, and her team is already signing multi-year leases for furnished units.

Hardin County Business Buzz — March 2026

Nate's Business Buzz — with Nate Bryan (pre-recorded)

Recording before his cruise, Nate Bryan led with a nostalgic headline: Baskin Robbins, across from the hospital for 50 years, will move to a new location near the Dollar General and Kroger area once it opens. A third Papa John's is coming to Central, finally bringing chain pizza delivery to the east side. Pelican Snowballs is still hunting for a 600–800 square foot space after two years of trying, Heartland Mini Golf's food truck is now named "Aces," and Nothing Bundt Cakes hosts a "Buy a Bundt" event this Saturday.

The Experienced Eater: Eat at the Spot

The Experienced Eater — Britten & Michele McDowell

Britten and Michele McDowell finally walked into Eat at the Spot, the authentic Jamaican kitchen at 865 S Dixie Blvd in Radcliff — about 200 yards from their own home. The smoked jerk chicken, carrying around 25 spices, was Britten's hands-down recommendation, alongside a traditional Caribbean green curry and sweet chili wings. The McDowells leaned into the authenticity of the place, from cleaver-chopped chicken you eat around the bone to the two Jamaican women cooking in traditional clothing in the kitchen. Britten plans to be a monthly regular.

Episode Highlights

"We're at 4.9 — that's a very balanced market. Anything over five is a buyer's market, anything under five is a seller's market. Condition and presentation really, really matter." — Rachel, Host and Hardin County Housing Market Expert
"That was the craziest thing. I check my email and it's from the marketing coordinator for the whole Boot Barn corporation — out of California. It's completely free all weekend long." — Kevin Jaggers, Special Guest, on the Boot Barn Grand Opening
"Baskin Robbins across from the hospital — it's been there 50 years. We have over 140 restaurants and retail. The last 50 years as a dessert place is incredible." — Nate, Business Buzz Host, on Baskin Robbins moving
"I would definitely recommend the jerk chicken — that would be my hands-down recommendation." — Britten, The Experienced Eater, on Eat at the Spot
