The detour, in plain words
Heading north on N. Main, the city's posted detour uses West Williams Street and Frank Street:
- Turn left on W. Williams St.
- Turn right on N. Mulberry St. (US 62).
- Turn right on Frank St., which brings you back to N. Main past the work zone.
The detour is a little over half a mile, compared with about a quarter mile on Main. Please do not use Patterson St. as a shortcut. The city has closed it to thru traffic for the week.
The city's notice and map close only the northbound lane. Southbound N. Main is not listed as closed, but expect crews, equipment and parked cars along that stretch.
Why it is closed
The city says the closure is for sidewalk and street improvements. Residents along that block need to park on the street while their driveway entrances are being built, so the northbound lane becomes parking and work space for the week.
This is not the first stretch of N. Main to get this kind of work. The News-Enterprise reported in November 2024 that the city had been improving drainage, sidewalks and accessibility along North Main a section at a time over two budget cycles. The city's notice this week does not say whether this block is part of that same project, who the contractor is, or whether more closures will follow.
