Jon O'Brien was out this week, so Rachel Brantingham and Grafton Sizemore split the Events segment for Monday, October 12 through Sunday, October 18. The week is heavy on Halloween, and the biggest night is Friday, October 16, when Mali-BOO Jack's Glow-O-Ween takes over Malibu Jack's in Elizabethtown.

Saturday, October 17 is the other big day, with the Glendale Crossing Festival, a trunk or treat, a kids' story hour and a cookie decorating class. The hosts only had room for the highlights, so use this as the short list and check the website for everything else.

Rachel opened with a joke about needing a beard to do Jon justice, then Grafton reminded her she had to do Jon's clap too. With Jon out, the two of them split the week between them and promised to keep the focus on a handful of events. As Rachel put it, there are so many Halloween events that every direction she turns, there is another one.

Friday, October 16

Mali-BOO Jack's Glow-O-Ween. This is the one Hardin Local has been talking about for two weeks, and Rachel called it the Halloween event of the year. It runs from 6 to 10 PM at Malibu Jack's, which Rachel described as the Elizabethtown City Center, the place everyone still knows as the mall. The lights go off and everything glows. There is an indoor trunk or treat with local businesses handing out candy, and costume contests for kids, teens, adults and whole families.

Grafton pointed out the price: $24.99 a person gets you four full hours of the attractions, plus an arcade card. Tickets are available from the QR code on screen during the show, or at the Malibu Jack's Elizabethtown website, malibujacksetown.com. Rachel stressed adding the "etown" to the address, because without it you land on the national franchise website.

Local businesses, churches and clubs can still join in. A booth is $50 and includes a ticket, and the deadline is Wednesday, October 14. To sign up, email outreach at malibujacksetown.com or call 270-600-7585. Rachel said it does two things: it is good exposure for your business, church or club, but it is really about the experience for the kids and families, the kind of memory they will bring up years later.

Monster Dash to End Domestic Violence 5K. The race is at Severns Valley Baptist Church in Elizabethtown, and this year it is a sunset race, starting at 7:30 PM. Registration is $25, and kids 12 and under run free. Rachel called it a super cool event.

Spooky Movies at the State, The Ring. The State Theater downtown shows two spooky movies on two nights this week, each at 7 PM for $3. The Ring is Friday. Grafton was upfront that you will not catch him there. "If it is a scary movie, it is not for me," he said.

Vine Grove Food Truck Friday. Optimist Park in Vine Grove hosts Food Truck Friday from 5 to 8 PM. Rachel's pitch: grab some grub and fuel up for the weekend.

Lincoln Trail Home Builders Association Parade of Homes. It runs Friday, October 16 through Sunday, October 18. You can start at any of the homes, buy a ticket, and make your way through the others, with door prizes if you tour them all. Locations and details are on the Lincoln Trail Home Builders Facebook page and website. Rachel gave a nod to the builders, designers and stagers who put in the work, and said it is a good excuse to grab the girlfriends and spend a day looking at beautiful new construction and current design features. She also noted this is the first year since 2008 that her family is skipping a featured home.

Saturday, October 17

Glendale Crossing Festival, 8 AM to 5 PM. Free admission, more than 400 vendors, and a parade with classic cars, fire trucks and tractors. Grafton said he had never heard of the festival until his girlfriend, a big antiquer, got him into this kind of event, and Rachel, who grew up in Glendale, remembered the traffic backing up on Highway 222 whenever "Glendale Days" came around. Handmade crafts, local booths and farm equipment are all part of the day. The hosts agreed it should be longer than one day.

Story Hour at Birdwhistell Books, 9:30 AM. At the bookstore on North Main Street in Elizabethtown. It is free, and the kids take home a craft.

Hocus Pocus Cookie Decorating Class, 11 AM to 1 PM. Krazy Kookies is running it at the Hardin County Chamber. It is a ticketed class, so check their website for tickets.

Victory Martial Arts Trunk or Treat, 5 to 7 PM. Off South Mulberry Street, and completely free. Rachel said it has been a fun one the past couple of summers. Just show up.

Spooky Movies at the State, Hocus Pocus. Saturday night's pick at 7 PM, $3, and the more kid friendly and family friendly of the two.
