Summary

Derby week lands on Hardin County like the calendar usually says it should. The Kentucky Derby anchors Saturday — but Friday brings a primetime Kentucky Oaks broadcast for the first time ever, plus an Oaks-night party at Bourbon Barrel Tavern with DJ Jimmy. Earlier in the week, Spring Revival runs three nights at LZBC Glendale, Boombox Bingo lights up Social Food Hall Wednesday, and a free garden-planning class hits the library Thursday.

Saturday is the day to clear the schedule. The Farmers Market season opener at 8 AM kicks it off. Hat contests, craft fairs, a 5K, chess, and a Phillips Grove after-Derby concert with Cole Chaney close it out.

Jon O'Brien led off the week the way Hardin County wants it led off when Derby is on the horizon — Derby first, but with enough texture to make Wednesday through Friday feel like a real run-up. Two multi-day events anchor the week. Spring Revival at LZBC Glendale runs tonight (Tuesday), Wednesday, and Thursday, 6:30 to 8:30 PM, at 7151 New Glendale Rd. And the USSSA "Run for the Rings" Youth Baseball Tournament brings A/AA teams from across the country to Elizabethtown Sports Park Friday through Sunday. Jon flagged the side-effect: traffic and crowded restaurants near the Sports Park side of E'town for the duration. Be patient.

Wednesday April 29 brings Boombox Bingo: Social Staff Edition to Social Food Hall from 6:30 to 8:30 PM. Jon's read on Teddy, who runs the boombox bingo circuit: "He always does a great job. He does it at Social. He does it out at Cosmic. He does it over at HubHaus. It's a fun night. Everybody has fun doing that. It's for all ages — bring the kids."

Thursday April 30 has a quietly useful free class — "How Do You Start Planning a Garden?" at the Hardin County Public Library at 11 AM, led by Amy Aldenderfer, the County Extension Horticulture Agent. Defining garden goals, choosing the right location, mapping layouts, planting schedule. Free, no registration mentioned.

Friday May 1 — Oaks Day is when the week starts feeling like Derby week.

Morning kicks off with Coffee and Cards at Apostoli Coffee (158 West Vine Street, Radcliff) from 8 to 9 AM, hosted by the Radcliff Small Business Alliance. Scott Lucas called this one out at the top of the show as the easy Small Business Week kickoff — Small Business Week officially runs May 4 through May 10, but the Radcliff Small Business Alliance event lands a few days early. Rachel co-signed Apostoli: "I love their coffee. It's one of my favorite coffee spots in the area. Them and Vibe — they're two of my favorites."

Friday afternoon, the Kids Derby Hat Workshop at the Colvin Community Center Resource Center runs 1 to 4 PM in Radcliff. Ages 8–16. FREE, but space is limited — registration is at radcliffrecreation.com. Perfect Derby-week tie-in if you've got kids who'd rather make something than sit through the Derby coverage.

Friday night opens up. Mia Jackson Live plays the Saber & Quill at Fort Knox (1118 Chaffee Ave) — doors 6:30, show 7:30. $10 advance, $15 at the door. Standup comedian and writer, Center Stage Comedy Series. Open to the public. Full Moon Candlelight Yoga: The Flower Moon runs at Karma Hot Yoga at 7 PM, and the Full Flower Moon Nature Hike at Saunders Springs kicks off at 8 PM, led by Naturalist Barbara Baker. Meet at the large gravel parking lot across from the Welcome Center. Bring a flashlight or headlamp. FREE, registration required at radcliffrecreation.com. Info: 270-351-4079. And DJ Jimmy spins Oaks Night at Bourbon Barrel Tavern.

The big Friday-night TV bonus: Kentucky Oaks in primetime for the first time ever. Post time around 8:40 PM ET, NBC primetime block 8:00 to 9:00 PM. "I don't know if many people remember this or know this, but isn't Oaks doing an evening nighttime post time on Friday night?" Jon said. "Instead of doing the regular post time, their post time for Oaks on Friday is 8:40 PM. It's the first time ever in primetime."

Saturday May 2 — Kentucky Derby Day runs all day. The 152nd Kentucky Derby post time is around 6:57 PM ET — Peacock coverage starts at noon, NBC + Peacock from 2:30 PM through the race. Local lineup is heavy.

Hardin County Farmers Market season opens Saturday from 8 AM to noon at 200 Peterson Drive — every Saturday April through October. Local produce, baked goods, crafts, flowers, honey, meat. Jon's framing: "Big community staple. Make sure you go out there. There's a lot of fun stuff to purchase."

Derby Party at Artie Ray's Sundown Lounge in Vine Grove (3675 Flaherty Rd) opens at 9 AM, event starts at 10. Best Derby Hat Contest, $12 pulled pork plates, karaoke with Gremlin after the Derby. Jon: "If you get a pulled pork plate for $12, that's a good deal." Project Grad Spring: 3rd Annual Craft Vendor Event at John Hardin High School runs 9 AM to 2 PM. Indoor booths, food trucks. First 50 customers get a swag bag.

A Gospel Color Run hosted by Stithton Baptist Church kicks off at 10 AM at 95 Park Ave., Radcliff — family fun, color stations, finish-line takeaway. Simply Southern Day at Jeminley Boutique runs 10 AM to 6 PM at 1612 Ring Road Suite 104 — Simply Southern rep on site, giveaways, photo with the SS Bronco, mocktails, snacks, annual sale.

For a different kind of Saturday: the 2026 Kentucky Derby Open Chess Tournament at Family Buffet (121 Towne Dr) runs 11 AM to 6:30 PM, hosted by Johnny Owens and the E-Town Chess Club. $25 cash entry, registration 11–11:30 AM, first round 11:45. First place pays $100 based on 16 players.

Then the Saturday night options. Bourbon Barrel Tavern hosts its biggest Derby bash of the year — and per Jon, you have to be there to find out what's happening: "To be determined. You've got to come to find out. We're not going to let anybody know until it happens." Derby Dancing — the Official After-Derby Concert at Phillips Grove in Radcliff runs doors 7, show 8, headlined by Cole Chaney and Brady Turner. And Cinco de Mayo Latin Dance Night at Beer Belly Fort Knox runs 8 to 11 PM with no cover, with music brought in from Lexington.

Sunday May 3 offers two community options — Etown Anime-Fest 2026 at the Pritchard Community Center runs 10 AM to 5 PM with cosplay, video game contests, vendors and attractions (kids free), and the Annual Plant Talk at Horsetown-Clear Creek Preserves at 4 PM is a free guided walk with Ted Dawson focused on native plants and traditional uses. Bring a journal and a camera — and if you'd like, a small jar to take home the homemade poison oak remedy Ted teaches.

Mint julep panel verdict for the audience considering it: Jon doesn't like them. Phil keeps his whiskey neat. But Rachel offered the right closer: if you love them, go to Louisville Saturday and grab one.
