EPD Officers responded to a report of shoplifting at Belk around 4:30 yesterday afternoon. The caller stated that a female shoplifter was being combative with loss prevention. While officers were still en route to the call, a further call came in and reported that a male subject who was with the female had pulled a handgun and pointed it as loss prevention. The male and female suspects got into a Chrysler minivan and fled the area southbound on North Dixie Avenue. Responding units were able to locate the van and conducted a felony traffic stop on North Dixie Avenue. Both suspects were detained, and the handgun and stolen merchandise were located inside the van. The suspects have been identified as Joey Smith, age 39, and Michael Moody age 36, both of Bardstown. Further investigation revealed that the female suspect had been inside the store stuffing merchandise into a purse. When loss prevention attempted to stop her through verbal commands, Smith immediately became combative, attempting to assault the loss prevention employee by throwing elbows and even attempting to bite him. When the employee attempted to restrain Smith from attacking him, Moody pulled a semi-auto handgun, chambered a round, and pointed the gun at the employee. The two then fled the area. Moody was later confirmed to be a convicted felon. Both Smith and Moody have been charged with Robbery 1st degree, and Moody was charged with possession of a handgun by a convicted felon.
